BBVSH Welcomes Dr. Greta VanDeventer and Dr. Alex Alvarez – October 2022
Dr. Greta VanDeventer is joining the surgery department at BBVSH. Dr. VanDeventer was a surgical intern at BBVSH and decided to come back after completing her surgery residency at Cornell University. She grew up in Vermont, USA, and is excited to be settling down in the Pacific Northwest after traveling widely across Canada and the USA for school and training. Dr. VanDeventer’s research interests focus primarily on working dogs and orthopedics, including describing a novel, minimally-invasive ultrasound technique to diagnose hip luxations in dogs. Dr. VanDeventer enjoys all aspects of surgery, but has special interest in emergency, orthopedic, and trauma surgery cases. Outside of work, she can be found exploring the outdoors including running, hiking, mountain biking, and skiing with her 3 herding-breed dogs.

Dr. Alex Alvarez is joining the surgery department at BBVSH. “Hi everyone! I’m Alejandro (Alex) Alvarez. I was originally born in Caracas, Venezuela, then moved to the US as a kid. After almost 8 years in the States, I moved to Spain, where I completed secondary school and veterinary school, graduating in 2015 from the University of Cordoba. After undergoing internships in France, Ireland, and Prince Edward Island, I was accepted into a combined Master of Science and surgery residency at Oregon State University, which I finished this past June. My wife and I relocated to Surrey after finishing my residency, and we just got married this past August in Alberta. We have two cats, a tuxedo named Pierre and an orange medium-hair, named Charlotte. Pierre is particularly friendly and eats just about anything. We say he is a labrador in a cat’s body. Charlotte is much more dainty and cat-ish We are very excited to be in BC, and I am very happy to be able to join the Boundary Bay family as a new member of the surgery team!”
