We are a VECCS Certified Level 1 facility (only 1 of 2 in Canada) and a VetCOT Level II Trauma Center.

      ICU/ER Veterinary Technician

      Learn or continue to perform specialized skills in our VECSS Level 1 facility and Level II VetCOT Trauma Centre, such as:

      • Blood typing and managing blood transfusion.
      • Placing arterial lines, jugular catheters and central lines.
      • Triaging and stabilizing trauma and emergency patients.
      • Keeping patients safe while capturing high-quality diagnostic radiographs, ultrasound, and CT scans.
      • Monitoring critical patients on a hospital-grade ventilator.
      • Routinely placing urinary catheters, NG feeding tubes, and PEG tubes.
      • Keeping patients safe and comfortable during anesthesia recovery.
      • Providing high level of nursing care to all patients.
      Anesthesia Veterinary Technician

      Learn or continue to perform specialized skills in anesthesia such as:

      • Placing arterial lines, performing epidurals, and managing blood transfusions.
      • Anesthetizing patients with ASA status III and IV.
      • Monitoring critical patients on mechanical ventilation.
      • Anesthetizing patients for a PDA (patent ductus arteriosus) procedure, pacemaker implantation, or balloon valvuloplasty with the cardiologist.
      • Anesthetizing patients for brain surgery or A-A luxation with the neurologist.
      • Handling a nerve stimulation machine to place local blocks for a TPLO.
      • Keeping patients safe while obtaining high-quality diagnostic imaging from an MRI, CT, or endoscopic procedure.
      Specialty Vet Technician

      Learn or continue to perform specialized skills with our Board-certified specialists in cardiology, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, radiology, and surgery such as:

      • Monitoring anesthesia if needed.
      • Working with clients on patient care and education.
      • Developing skills and knowledge specific to the different departments such as chemotherapy administration in oncology, specialized blood tests and endoscopy for internal medicine, monitoring traumatic brain injury in neurology, etc.
      • Helping prepare cytology and histology samples.
      • Using and developing laboratory skills with in our in –house lab.

      Veterinary Technician Internships at BBVSH

      New and recent veterinary technician graduates receive direct one-to-one mentorship and real-word clinical experience to help them advance their skills and knowledge, and build confidence in a supervised,  supported environment.

      If you’re looking for the next step after school that will help you build a rewarding career, gain experience, improve your skills and work alongside like-minded individuals, then come join us!

      We accept applicants year-round to our program.

      We’re looking for highly motivated, newly graduated veterinary technician/technologist students to join our one-year, paid internship program at Boundary Bay Veterinary Specialty Hospital.

      Our internship will provide you with first-hand clinical experience that will allow you to apply and expand your knowledge and give you a competitive edge in your growing career. Gain real-world clinical experience under the direct supervision and one-to-one mentorship of our experienced RVTs and VTSs at our VECCS & VetCOT certified 26,000 sq. ft. hospital in Surrey.

      Our training program will break down cases and patient care into manageable learning components so that you can gain experience and build confidence, and be successful in a fast-paced, challenging hospital like ours.

      Advance your knowledge and skills in the dynamic world of multi-disciplinary veterinary specialty & emergency medicine in a supported environment throughout the internship, alongside our collaborative team of ER doctors and board-certified specialists.

      How our program works

      Our internship program is designed to help newly graduated RVTs transition from their education program to the real world by placing them into cases that are at their level of learning and where they can grow their skill sets in a supportive environment. Cases are broken down into manageable learning components and interns advance to the next level of complexity only when they are ready and confident in their ability to take on more responsibility with less supervision.

      We’re looking for people who:
      • Are highly motivated, self-starters.
      • Maintain a positive attitude, even in a challenging and fast-paced environment.
      • Love to learn and are fearless about trying new things.
      • Are as attentive to medical details as they are to staff culture and the dynamics of working as a team.
      What you will get from this experience:

      Through this program, you will learn the skills and knowledge needed to work with patients with an advanced disease process, critically think through nursing care, and work with the veterinarian to problem-solve patient injuries and illnesses.

      Here are just some of the opportunities you will have through this program:
      • Direct supervision and one-to-one mentorship and support from our experienced RVTs and VTSs throughout the program.
      • Knowledge and hands-on experience at a pace that fosters success, including skills in:
        • Basic / advanced nursing.
        • Anesthesia / analgesia.
        • Diagnostic imaging training.
        • Time management.
        • Behavioural skills (e.g., pain management).
      • Experiential learning working as part of a team with our board-certified specialists and ER doctors.
      • Rotation through departments such as:
        • Anesthesia (includes surgery, IM, neurology, dentistry)
        • Oncology
        • Cardiology
        • Emergency triage
        • Intensive Care Unit
        • Intermediate Care Unit
        • Diagnostic imaging
      Structured learning through:
      • Direct supervision and one-to-one mentorship
      • Monthly goals/check-ins
      • In-house Continuing Education (CE)
      • Journal Club
      Eligibility
      • Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technology Program (includes current year graduates).
      • Mandatory: VTNE eligible OR passed the VTNE.
      • Registered BCVTA member (or other provincial association).
      Duration & Deadline

      This is a full-year program. Applications can be submitted at any time during the year. Start dates/timelines will be considered on an individual basis, with flexibility regarding vacation conflicts.

      • 12-month structured program.
      • Applications are accepted year-round.
      Remuneration

      $25.50 / hour (with potential for increased wage upon program completion).
