Launch Your Veterinary Technician Career with BBVSH’s Mentored Internship Program

Starting your career as a newly graduated veterinary technician (technologist) is both exciting and challenging—especially when entering a multidisciplinary specialty and emergency hospital.

At Boundary Bay Veterinary Specialty Hospital (BBVSH), our Veterinary Technician Internship (VTI) program supports new and recent graduates through immersive, real-world experience and one-to-one mentorship. Open year-round, this program offers a structured path for early-career RVTs to gain confidence, build clinical skills, and discover the areas of veterinary medicine they’re most passionate about.

Our Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) are integral to every part of our hospital, from the fast-paced environment of the Emergency and ICU departments to the specialized focus of  surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and more. As interns progress through the program, they work alongside our experienced RVTs, Veterinary Technologist Specialists (VTSs), and board-certified veterinary specialists in each of these areas—gaining exposure, developing their skills, and identifying where their strengths and interests align.

(Note: The terms “technician” and “technologist” are used interchangeably throughout this post.)

Real-World Clinical Experience with One-to-One Mentorship

Our internship program is designed to help newly or recently graduated veterinary technicians transition from their education program to the real world by placing them into cases that match their current level of learning—and where they can continue to grow in a supportive environment.

In our program, Veterinary Technician Interns (VTIs) receive direct one-to-one mentorship and real-world clinical experience that allows them to apply and expand their knowledge while advancing their skills. This approach gives them a competitive edge as they grow in their career.

VTIs gain experience under the direct supervision of our experienced Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) and Veterinary Technologist Specialists (VTSs), all within our VECCS & VetCOT certified 26,000 sq. ft. hospital in Surrey.

Our training program breaks down cases and patient care into manageable learning components so interns can build confidence and succeed in a fast-paced, challenging environment. As their skills develop, interns advance to more complex tasks and cases—but only when they’re ready to take on more responsibility with less supervision.

Progressive Learning Across Specialized Departments

The VTI program offers structured exposure to a variety of hospital departments, helping interns grow their clinical skill set in a manageable, step-by-step format. Rotations include:

  • Oncology
  • Cardiology
  • Emergency triage
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

  • In-house continuing education (CE) sessions
