During this CE presentation, Dr. Mark Harmon, DVM, DACVIM (Cardiology) will be focusing on how to manage cardiac patients in emergency situations. Dr. Harmon will begin by outlining how to recognize and diagnose a dog or cat that is in congestive heart failure, and what treatment options are available to patients. Dr. Harmon will be discussing how to identify and treat other cardiac related conditions including arrhythmias and pulmonary hypertension.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Recognize and diagnose congestive heart failure in dogs & cats
  2. Know what treatment options are available to the patient in acute heart failure
  3. Understand the prognostic signs and treatment options for arterial thromboembolic disease
  4. Identify arrhythmias common in the ER setting and when/how to treat them
  5. Recognize the signs of pulmonary hypertension, the diseases that cause it, and the implications of treatment

About the Presenter

Dr. Mark Harmon is a board-certified veterinary cardiologist. Originally from Arkansas, Dr. Harmon has worked in primary care practice as well as specialty practice in both academia and private practice. He and his wife, Dr. Meghan Harmon, love the Pacific Northwest region and have moved from Seattle to British Columbia to join the incredible team at Boundary Bay. Dr. Harmon has a special interest in congenital heart disease and interventional cardiac therapies such as pacemaker implantation, balloon valvuloplasty, and minimally invasive shunt occlusion. He has lectured locally and regionally on topics such as emergency management of cardiac disease, arrhythmia management, nutritionally-mediated heart disease, and heartworm disease. Dr. Harmon looks forward to being of service to dog breeders in BC and referring veterinarians throughout British Columbia.
