You can expect to learn:

  1. Wound Classification & Types Understand the spectrum of wound presentations—from clean-contaminated and crush injuries to complex thoracic and abdominal wounds.
  2. Learn to identify and differentiate between lacerations, avulsions, bite wounds, punctures, and pressure necrosis.
  3. Initial Wound Management Master the principles of patient stabilization, including analgesia, fluid therapy, and hemorrhage control.
  4. Explore the appropriate use of systemic antibiotics and indications for wound culture.
  5. Wound Care Techniques: Develop proficiency in wound exploration, lavage, and various debridement methods (surgical, mechanical, autolytic).
  6. Evaluate closure strategies including primary, delayed primary, second intention, and secondary closure.
  7. Bandaging Principles Learn to select and apply appropriate primary, secondary, and tertiary bandage layers for each stage of healing. Gain expertise in managing tie-over bandages for anatomically challenging areas.
  8. Drain Management: Understand the indications and techniques for using open (Penrose) and closed (Jackson-Pratt, vacutainer) drainage systems. Learn best practices for monitoring and removal to optimize healing outcomes.

About the Presenter

Dr. Tanya Wright, DVM, DACVS-SA, smiling and crouching beside her black dog with towering mountains and green trees in the background on a sunny day.

Dr. Tanya Wright grew up in Burnaby, BC and is very happy to be back on the coast after a long period living across Canada in Victoria, Saskatoon, Charlottetown, Toronto and Guelph for school and training. Her research has been primarily focused on canine osteosarcoma and developing new minimally invasive methods for detecting early cancer spread of this highly aggressive disease using blood samples. Dr. Wright enjoys all aspects of surgery but has a specific interest in minimally invasive surgical options and oncologic surgery.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time outside in our beautiful province doing activities such as hiking, skiing, biking, and kayaking. She moved to BC with her friendly cat Rider and companion dog Gypsy.

She excited to be joining the extended Boundary Bay Veterinary Specialty Hospital team in Surrey, BC and looks forward to being of service to pet owners in the Greater Vancouver area and meeting you and your beloved family members.
